Denver New Year’s Eve Fireworks 2026: Times, Where to Watch, and What to Do After
Two free rooftop fireworks shows over downtown, a 9 PM countdown under the Mile High Tree, and a drone show at 7. Here is how the night actually runs, where to stand, and how to get home without a $200 ride.
Every Denver NYE event Get White Rose Gala Tickets
Denver does New Year’s Eve fireworks twice. The first show goes up at 9 PM, early enough for kids, early dinner crowds, and anyone with somewhere else to be at midnight. The second goes up at midnight, with the actual countdown. Both are free, both fire from rooftops over 16th Street, and both run about eight minutes. Last year nearly 40,000 people stood on 16th Street between 8 PM and midnight to watch, and the Downtown Denver Partnership counted more than 330,000 downtown visits that day. It was the biggest downtown event of the year after the Parade of Lights. Plan for a crowd.

What the Denver NYE fireworks actually are
Most cities shoot New Year’s Eve fireworks from a barge or a park. Denver shoots them off hotel and office roofs 26 to 28 stories up, which is why they look like they’re going off directly over your head anywhere on the mall. Zambelli Fireworks has run the show for years with the same designer who does Times Square, and last year each show was about 3,000 shots over roughly 1,000 electrical connections wired across both rooftops. The two shows are built as one show fired twice, so there is no reason to feel cheated if you only make the 9 PM.
The rooftop show started in 2000 and has been co-sponsored by VISIT DENVER and the downtown BID for 20-plus years. Last year was the first New Year’s Eve on the fully rebuilt 16th Street after the $175 million reconstruction, with the street open end to end, and the turnout jumped about 50 percent over 2024. Expect the same this year: the novelty is gone but the street is still new.
Two things that aren’t fireworks but belong on the same evening:
- The 7 PM drone show. About 600 drones for 10 to 15 minutes, launched just west of downtown, every night from November 20 through December 31. New Year’s Eve is the last night of the season. Official viewing spots are the Tivoli Quad on the Auraria campus, Sculpture Park at the arts complex, the Denver Art Museum’s Martin Building terrace, and the rooftop bars 54thirty and Peaks Lounge. Weather cancellations get posted after 4 PM.
- The 9 PM Mile High Tree countdown. The 110-foot tree on the Tivoli Quad runs light-and-music shows every 15 minutes from 5 to 10 PM all season, and on New Year’s Eve it does a ball-drop-style countdown at 9 PM, timed to the first fireworks show. Free. This is the family-friendly midnight.
One wrinkle for 2026: VISIT DENVER’s events guide lists the tree on the Great Lawn at Civic Center Park this year, while its own Mile High Tree page still says Tivoli Quad. Civic Center is mid-construction (see below), so we’re going with Tivoli until the city says otherwise.
Where to watch the fireworks
Anywhere on 16th Street works. That’s the organizers’ own advice, and it’s right. The street is a mile of heated patios between the two launch rooftops, and the shells are big enough to see from either end. The closer you get to the middle of the mall, the more of both rooftops you see at once.
The best block, if you want to pick one. Between Arapahoe and Champa you’re roughly between the two launch sites with open sky both directions. The bars and the DJ stages fill the sidewalks, so claim a spot by 8:30 for the 9 PM show and by 11:15 for midnight. Last year’s crowd was about 40,000 on the street, and the midnight show is the bigger one.
Rooftop bars with a view. 54thirty on top of Le Meridien at 1475 California and Peaks Lounge on the 27th floor of the Hyatt Regency at 650 15th Street both get named by the local press every year, and both are also official drone-show viewing spots. Both will be packed and both will have a cover or a minimum on New Year’s Eve. Call ahead.
Skip Civic Center Park this year. Every old guide tells you to stand between the City and County Building and the Capitol. Civic Center’s Phase 1 construction started in November 2025 and runs into 2027, with much of the park fenced off. Use the Sheraton end of the mall instead, which is the same view without the fence.
Farther out. Higher ground around the city can see the shells but not the low stuff. If you’re not downtown, you’re better off at one of the suburban or mountain shows below than squinting from a hill.
Where The Ritz-Carlton sits in all this: 1881 Curtis Street, three blocks up from the mall at 16th and Curtis, near the Skyline Park end. If you’re coming to White Rose Gala, the 9 PM show is a five-minute walk from the front door.
The 9 PM show or the midnight show?
The 9 PM show is the smart one. Same fireworks, smaller crowd, trains still running on the full schedule, and you can still make a dinner reservation or a party afterward. Families, early dinner crowds and anyone with a ticket somewhere else at 10 should do 9 PM.
The midnight show is the real countdown and the bigger crowd, and it ends with everyone on 16th Street trying to leave at the same time, at the exact hour rideshare pricing peaks. If midnight on the street is the point of your night, go for it, just read the getting-home section first and have the plan before you have the champagne.
The third option, which is ours: watch the 9 PM show from the mall, walk three blocks to the Ritz, and be inside a ballroom with a live band when the midnight show goes up. You’ll hear it. You won’t be standing in it.
Getting downtown, getting home, and the weather
RTD is free from 7 PM to 7 AM. Zero Fare New Year’s Eve has run 17 straight years, sponsored by Molson Coors, and VISIT DENVER already lists it for 2026 even though RTD usually makes its own announcement in early December. Buses, light rail, commuter rail, the whole system. That solves the way in. The way home is the problem, because the schedule thins after midnight.
Last trains from Union Station, last year’s pattern: A Line 1:00 AM, B 1:09, D 12:48, E 12:55, G 1:01, N 1:26, W 12:56. The 16th Street FreeRide shuttle pauses during both fireworks shows and may stop running for the whole window from about 7 PM to 1:30 AM, so don’t count on it to move you along the mall. Light rail does not cross 16th Street between 8 PM and 1 AM, so the D and H Lines turn around at Theatre District and Convention Center. Look up your line the week of.
Driving. Parking garages downtown fill by early evening and the city hasn’t published a street-closure list for 2026. SpotHero was the official parking partner last year. If you must drive, park on the far side of Union Station or near the Convention Center and walk in. Do not plan to drive out of downtown at 12:15.
Rideshare. Uber’s own numbers say the busiest window of the year is 12:30 to 2:30 AM on New Year’s and fares can run seven times normal. The cheap moves are to leave right at midnight before the crowd clears, or wait until after 2:30, or walk a few blocks away from the mall before you order. Or don’t need a ride at all, which is the whole argument for a hotel downtown.
Weather. Denver’s normal high on December 31 is 43 and the normal low is 17. Sunset is about 4:45 PM, so the 7 PM drone show is already full dark and the midnight show is usually in the teens. The 16th Street patios are heated but the street isn’t. Coat, gloves, real shoes.
Fireworks and countdowns around Colorado on December 31
If downtown isn’t your night, here is what else fires on December 31. Everything below is annual; the ones marked pending hadn’t posted 2026 times at our last check.
| Time | Show | Where | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 PM / about 9:30 PM | Breckenridge: torchlight parade down Peak 9 at 6, fireworks from the base of Peak 9 around 9:30, about 15 minutes. Watch from Blue River Plaza, the North Gondola lot, Main Street Station or Ridge Street | Breckenridge | Listed for 2026 |
| Evening | Steamboat: base-area programming from 5:30, Light Up Snow Cat Parade, then fireworks. Free | Steamboat Springs | Listed for 2026, fireworks time pending |
| 9 PM & midnight | AdAmAn Club: five shells at 9 for the founders, the full show at midnight, from the summit of Pikes Peak. Visible across the Springs on a clear night, 100-plus years running | Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs | Last year’s pattern |
| 8 PM | Aspen and Granby Ranch base-area fireworks | Aspen, Granby | Last year’s pattern |
| About 5:30 PM | Crested Butte torchlight parade, then fireworks. Grand Lake fires after 9, Powderhorn around 6 | Resort towns | Last year’s pattern |
| 7 PM | Keystone River Run Village fireworks | Keystone | Pending not posted for 2026 |
| Evening | Winter Park: free New Year’s Eve at the Rendezvous Event Center with sledding and a silent disco. Their fireworks are December 24, not the 31st | Winter Park | Listed for 2026 |
| 9 PM | Boulder has no public fireworks or citywide countdown. The Dairy Arts Center’s BETC show does a 9 PM ball drop | Boulder | Listed for 2026 |
The Denver suburbs don’t do New Year’s fireworks. We checked Northfield, Golden, Littleton, Southlands, Lone Tree, Castle Rock and Parker for 2025 and 2026 and found ticketed venue parties and daytime Noon Year’s Eve events, no public shows. If you want fireworks on the Front Range, it’s downtown or Pikes Peak.
The mountain math: if you drive up for a 9:30 show and come back the same night, you’re on I-70 with everyone else at exactly the wrong hour. Book a room up there or stay in the city.
The free night and the family night
The whole downtown night costs nothing: drone show at 7, tree countdown at 9, fireworks at 9 and midnight, free trains both directions. Here is how to build a family version around it, with the stuff that’s confirmed for December 31, 2026.
- Noon Year’s Eve at the Children’s Museum of Denver (Marsico Campus): a ball drop at the top of every hour from 10 AM to 3 PM in the SNOW DAYS plaza, included with admission ($19.75 ages 2 to 59, $17.75 for age 1 and 60-plus, members free). No advance tickets, buy at the door that day. Confirmed for 2026.
- Zoo Lights at the Denver Zoo: December 31 is a Sensory-Friendly Night, 4:30 to 9 PM, $25.95 adults and $18.95 youth, tickets on sale November 5. Confirmed for 2026.
- Blossoms of Light at the Botanic Gardens: 4:30 to 9 PM, advance timed tickets required, open through January 10. Confirmed dates; check the December 31 slot when tickets post.
- Magical Winter Nights at the Museum of Nature and Science: opens 4:30 PM nightly through January 2. December 31 hours weren’t posted at our last check.
- The 9 PM plan: Zoo Lights or the Gardens at 4:30, drone show at 7 from the Tivoli Quad, Mile High Tree countdown at 9, first fireworks show at 9 from the mall, home by 10. They think they stayed up till midnight. Everybody wins.
Once they’re in bed, the adult version is on our Denver NYE parties page, and everything else happening that night is on the full calendar.
What to do after the 9 PM show: our answer
We produce White Rose Gala, so read this part knowing that. It’s the 24th year of a Gatsby New Year’s Eve takeover of The Ritz-Carlton, Denver at 1881 Curtis Street, three blocks from the mall. Live swing band and DJs across a ballroom and a speakeasy room, showgirls and theatrical performers, selfie stations, a countdown with a balloon drop at midnight. 21+, 8 PM to 1 AM, one ticket tier at $109 with fees included, cash bars, dress to impress. Discounted rooms upstairs through our link while the block lasts.
How it fits with the fireworks: doors open at 8, the first show goes up at 9. Watch it from the mall on your way in, or from the sidewalk out front, then come inside and warm up. At midnight you’ll be in the ballroom for the balloon drop while the second show goes off a few blocks away. If being outside at midnight is the whole point for you, we are not your party, and the parties page lists the ones that are.
The part nobody plans for is 12:15 AM. Every free thing on this page ends with you on a sidewalk downtown at the busiest rideshare hour of the year, in the teens. Ours ends with an elevator. That’s the pitch, and the hotel packages page has the math on rooms versus rides.

Fireworks at 9. Ballroom at midnight. Elevator at 1.
